Emergency departments (EDs) may be the primary, and even only, connection to the healthcare system for significant numbers of people with opioid use disorder (OUD) or opioid overdose, making them important sites of intervention for people with OUD. EDs can serve as a bridge, connecting patients with OUD to long-term outpatient care.
